Sapphire waves crash down like thunder
Eyes around the world stare out in wonder
Islanders take this gift for granted
Sitting on the beach I'm quite enchanted
Beneath sunset skies I can see my reflection
Walking barefoot through liquid I make a connection
Salty spray soaks my clothes as it leaps for the sky
When it's raining its lovely to see the trees cry
As the waves start to calm their voices become soothing
The gentle spring breeze keeps the dancing trees moving
Like a bracing wind times like this blow me away
And this natural artwork changes every day
At the edge of a cliff I stare out at the ocean
Though it all looks the same I can see it's emotion
Many wonders are born from this expansive jewel
Taking all this for granted would make me a fool
Precious gifts such as this aren't uncommon for me
Natural island beauty gives so much to see
But the ocean is one gift I've come to adore
Many treasured memories I've made on the shore

Memories...
Sometimes I still dream of you
You made my dreams come true
And though we've been apart for like forever
I still imagine us together
I wonder if I'll ever stop loving you
And I'll feel so blue
While you already moved on
Each day I struggle to stay strong
And when the memory is here
I try to keep my vision clear
For I know I should forget
Because you did me wrong, just like that
I can't stand feeling this way
Wanting this, but trying to walk away
It's like you're inside my brain
Not causing much but pain

Mermaid's Dream
Swimming in an endless sea,
Living under the water so free,
Light above, Darkness below,
Where it started, no one knows.
Searching as I transcend,
Willing to comprehend,
What more could there be,
Other than the endless sea.
Is there another world above?
It's inhabitants able to love?
What would I give,
To find a way to live,
Out of the sea,
If only it could be.
I know not of that world,
Its stories untold,
beckoning me closer,
Like a song from it's composer.
Do I stay or do I swim?
Lose some scales and gain more skin?
Should I leave what I know behind,
And seek out a brighter sky?

rapids.
dark-eyed girl, i'd take a step forward
plunge and drown and fish you
out and save you. i'd drag
you to shore with all my
strength, not that i have much but
you seem to believe differently.
i'd hold you tightly, gently but oh how
tightly, and pulling your quaint face right
up to mine i'd
breathe
life into you passing from my
lips to yours onto your
tongue all the way to your
throat down into your
lungs i'd give you all that
life and light and hope and
love and whatever you
need, i want to give you
happiness.
dark-eyed girl, i would hold
out my hand for you to take it, for
you to do whatever you wanted
with it because

Living on Vancouver Island I get to see the ocean every day, and have access to it whenever I want. As an islander I can sometimes take it for granted, but there are many out there who cannot make such a claim. I've spent a ton of my life around the ocean, and I can't help but overlook it sometimes.. which is why I wrote this poem. I wrote not only to describe it's breathtaking beauty, but to write a more personal poem relating to the ocean. I figured it was about time, as I've never written about it before.
I didn't worry much about line length, punctuation, and at some points.. flow. I wanted to be descriptive, and I wanted it to be personal. But most of all, I wanted to do the picture in my head justice. And I feel I've done that.
As always, I'd love to know what you think.
