Sapphire waves crash down like thunder
Eyes around the world stare out in wonder
Islanders take this gift for granted
Sitting on the beach I'm quite enchanted

Beneath sunset skies I can see my reflection
Walking barefoot through liquid I make a connection
Salty spray soaks my clothes as it leaps for the sky
When it's raining its lovely to see the trees cry

As the waves start to calm their voices become soothing
The gentle spring breeze keeps the dancing trees moving
Like a bracing wind times like this blow me away
And this natural artwork changes every day

At the edge of a cliff I stare out at the ocean
Though it all looks the same I can see it's emotion
Many wonders are born from this expansive jewel
Taking all this for granted would make me a fool

Precious gifts such as this aren't uncommon for me
Natural island beauty gives so much to see
But the ocean is one gift I've come to adore
Many treasured memories I've made on the shore
Living on Vancouver Island I get to see the ocean every day, and have access to it whenever I want. As an islander I can sometimes take it for granted, but there are many out there who cannot make such a claim. I've spent a ton of my life around the ocean, and I can't help but overlook it sometimes.. which is why I wrote this poem. I wrote not only to describe it's breathtaking beauty, but to write a more personal poem relating to the ocean. I figured it was about time, as I've never written about it before.

I didn't worry much about line length, punctuation, and at some points.. flow. I wanted to be descriptive, and I wanted it to be personal. But most of all, I wanted to do the picture in my head justice. And I feel I've done that.

As always, I'd love to know what you think. :la:
